X marks the spot

It's almost midnight, the winds are heavy around 40-50mph... all my windows are taped up with duc tape

The scariest thing is the sound. The noise of the wind is so ominus. The lights are flickering, so this might mean that power is going to go out soon.

Wonder what I will wake up to this morning, when the eye should be over us? That is of course if I can get any sleep.

Just Before Dark

Cascade

While I have time and the computer has power and internet connection I am creating some digital images. This is one that reminds me of water cascading over rocks... appropraite given the water that will be flowing during IKE.

The curfew has started, the winds are starting but are small, no rain yet... it's going to be a long nite.

Something to past the time

The Pink House awaits IKE

This is the house today at 5pm
This is the house this morning at 8am.

Sounds like they are planning a 7pm curfew, and the streets here are very clear. Expecting to lose power at some point, and planning what to do if a window should break in the middle of the night. I have my camera battery charged and ready. Strange to still be hours away and not a drop of rain... already 45minutes away people have lost their homes to the flooding and tidal surge.

IKE ART

I created some IKE art from the weather.com satellite photo of the hurricane that is preparing to hit Houston.

Will be interesting to see what other photos and art get created this week. Just hope one of those items isn't a handmade sign for me to hold while I am on the roof of the house!

Hunker Down Now

Looks like I am staying in Houston to ride out Hurricane IKE, where I live is High Ground as was not given status as a place to evacuate, not mandatory or even advisory evacuation. I have my water, batteries, peanutbutter, games and will be very happy as long as I have power & internet. I removed all the items on the front porch. Lots of caring friends and family have called to check in and offer me places to go. I hope to share more pictures as the weekend goes bye and pray that nothing too drastic happens on Lubbock Street at the Pink House. You can click the picture to see it larger. The good thing is that I do not live in an area that floods. Dealing with the wind might be the problem.

Studio Workout

I spent the weekend in the studio working. I finished the commission piece, that you see here. It is called "watermelon catalyst".
I also worked on sveral pieces in the studio. My friend, Armando came for a surprise visit and we painted together in the studio. Orginally I thought this was the 2nd Saturday, but it was not... that's next weekend.
The next three pieces are works in progress.... it was great to make so much progress on art.

Upcoming fall art shows at Winter Street, Art on the Avenue, Art Conspiracy, The Box Show all require new work. Art Chatter starts up again and I am looking forward to meeting with my art friends.

Sometime when you work, you keep pushing, photography allows me to understand and look back at the different versions, thus improving my internal thought process.

Working on this helped me de-stress from my corporate job. I often think about what it would be like to win the lottery - and I would just work on my art.

From the ashes

These are photographs were taken the night of August 7th around Midnight. I know this because I Twittered about it.

The lights, the wet streets because of rain. Something was happening down the street.

I forgot about being awoke by the firetrucks, so it was a few days later that I was driving down the street and noticed that this big old house had burned down.

Makes you realize how life can change in an instant.

This piece of computer digital collage is from these images. Fire can be a combustive creative catalyst.

The Vision

Tonight I watched the DNC on PBS and am reminded of the reasons why I am a Democrat.

Listening to the narrative of the speakers I am moved, I am empowered, and I can exercise that with my vote - which will be for Barack Obama.

What is vision, but seeing hope and new frontiers, and being able to point others toward that vision, to make each person feel that they can contribute to the success of that vision.

This artwork symbolizes vision. What do you see?

Official Computer Geek

I spent the weekend being a geek. It started with assisting a fellow artist with her website. Then a drive to Fry's Electronics to get a power supply for my desktop that died on Thursday. After a brief visit with some other artists at G3 Gallery at Winter Street Studio for a returning friend, John; I headed home to take apart my computer and hopefully put it back together --- and I did! and the computer worked! Guess that makes it official - I am a geek! Sunday was spent relaxing with watching the Olympics, napping, reading, and creating on the computer. I created this image which reminds me of a forest of birch trees. Can not believe that it is already time for kids to go back to school. I have volunteered with a few other artists to teach 7th grade art class at a school here in Houston. It is sad that art is one of the classes that gets cut. Maybe Obama will address education? He had some tough decisions ahead, and I hope that restoring the pride in education will be one of them.

Waterfall

Tonight I worked on this digital piece, using photoshop, a photograph of a painting I did, a drawing, and a digital art piece. I think it captures alot of what I think I am experimenting with now...layers, painting of lines that create movement that underlies the image, a graphic element (circles, rectangles), and then the thought --- what is a waterfall?

NYC

I just got an email from an old pal, who like me has had trouble keeping her blog up to date. Some many things to do, and then you have this blog. Her blog reminded me of when I used to live in NYC. Lived on the upper east side on 90th Street between 2nd & 3rd avenue in a 5 story walkup (on the 5th floor) across from Rupert Towers. She has a section now of the stars that she has seen in public --- I saw Diana Ross in Central Park (twice, the first time in the rain), I met Andy Warhol in Union Square, saw Liza Minnelli at the Red Parrot, met Morgan Fairchild on the dance floor of Studio 54 on Valentines Day (she floated down from a heart shaped swing), had Divine sign my underwear at a club called The Tunnel after singing her new hit called "Trash", seen Kevin Bacon filming a movie, was an accidental extra for a movie called Those Girls in their Summer Dresses on fifth avenue (forgot who was in the movie), am sure I could think of others but those are the most memorable star sightings. NEW YORK .... if you can make it there you can make it anywhere!

EDOUARD

Working from home today as Tropical Storm Edouard hits Houston. Rain and Wind, but so far no worries.

Monday, August 04, 2008

This just in...

Tropical Storm, Tropical Surge, or Hurricane Edouard will hit Houston tomorrow... should make for an interesting blog, if I have power and do not loose internet access. My first big storm.... got my water, peanutbutter, flashlights & batteries and worst case scenario --- I can read a good book or I can draw or I can take photos.

Working in the Studio

This is how the commission piece is progressing. When I walked into the studio today this is the way I last left it, three weeks ago.
I started immediately adding some more layers of color. ...and then I had to wait for it to dry.

So while the item dried I worked on a few other pieces that I have been working on. This piece is called "ocean view" It reminds me of being in a room looking out through slit between the wall and a curtain seeing out to the ocean.

This piece is called "Celebration", while it still needs to be varnished, I think it is finished.

This is where I left off with the commission piece when I left the studio today.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

I created this piece for my Dad, who is celebrating a birthday. This is for my dad who likes clowns, and at one time collected them from his favorite, clown!

I had fun working on this and see application of a possible transfer to actual canvas.

and Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad... wow... 49 years!!

Houston & Friends

Houston was visited by my Dallas Friends Tim, Stephen (aka PH), Steve and Rob. We spent the evening visiting the art studio at Winter Street.
Where we were treated to a wonderful sunset from the roof top.
Which reflected on the buildings of the Houston skyline.

I got to get in with the group as we waited for darkness to fall so we could watch the fireworks. You can see what we saw that evening - by clicking the video below.

4th of July Fireworks

Appears my video was too large and long for You Tube... I will need to figure out how to reduce the length and show you the highlights... something new to learn on the video and web front....

30 Years

I created this abstract from the cover design that I did for a brochure that will be used for my 30th High School Reunion. This summer my class of 1978 of Williamsville North High School will celebrate along with the class of 1978 of Willamsville East High School. Our two classes entered Williamsville North in the ninth grade, only to be split in two when they build the new "east" high school.

DIGITALIST, ARTIST, JOURNALIST

I created my first digital portrait today. This is using a new electronic gadget. I am such a geek. It records the drawing as well as the sound. Thus this is a drawing that also captures the voice, story and spirit of my artist friend, Robert Derr, who agreed to be my first model.

Click This Link, and then click the play arrow under the drawing box to see the drawing and hear the story.

Studio Night

I spend tonight relaxing from a stressful busy corporate day by letting my anxieties go and I just had fun creating. I worked on several new pieces. Some new landscapes that I will send to a store in Dallas that is successful selling those. Some new abstracts that will be for work that I would like to exhibit in the fall. New ideas are gelling. I met my new neighbor, Christine, nice person who moved here from Austin.

Six Degrees

Me & My Friend, Michael
PBS (the station Michael & I watched tonight)
Emile Norman (the program that was on PBS)
Big Sur (the place Emile Norman lives)
Henry Miller (a neighbor of Emile in Big Sur)
To Paint Is To Love Again (a book Henry wrote, and I bought)

It is interesting to connect the dots of how the spirits of connection can happen. What six degrees have you experienced lately?

Water Melon Scares Dog

It was a great Saturday. A breakfast at Katz Deli with friend, shopping at Aaron Brothers penny sale, a drive to the woodlands, dinner with new friends and collectors of my art. While visiting them their dog, a cute black cocker spaniel started barking wildly.... at a watermelon on the kitchen counter. Funny, and it took some time to get the dog calmed down.

Lillian

Old paint on canvas, as it ages sometimes, becomes transparent and when that happens it is possible in some pictures to see the original lines, a tree will show through a women's dress, a child makes way for a dog, a boat is no longer on an open sea, that is called Pentimento, because the painter repented, changed his mind.

What was there for me once
What is there for me now

Interesting people

I have had an interesting few evenings with artist friends who I have randomly, and quite spontaneously ran into. Each person has their own stories. I like stories. I remember Robert speaking about the comfort of sitting in this chair. "Wow, this is a deep chair" he said. I created this drawing from memory of him sitting in the chair and we swapped stories. Another artist friend, Alex, dropped by yesterday evening. Alex is deaf... but he sure can talk alot, anything but silent. My evening have gotten me away from the lonely routine I have found myself retreating. Re-energizing my creative thought processes, re-energizing my social skills and making plans with other artists and friends.

Art Chatter Night

Tonight was my night to be the artist that gets critiqued. It was the last night before we break for the summer becuase it just gets tooo darn hot! The evening was well attended and the dicussion around my painting versus my digital art and the space inbetween was just the discussion that I wanted to have with this diverse audience.

I walked away with some great things to think about, sift through and ponder. What I do know is that the commentary will help make me a better artist.

Now I need to get back to listening to my inner voice, focus on the skill level of my handiwork whether that is by hand, brush or computer --- push some limits, change some of my own perceptions, expand into some unknown territories.

So what now.... ? In the immortal words of Ru Paul - "You Better Work"

Thank you to my Art Chatter Buddies - if you happen to read my blog.

Creative Block

I had a weekend where not much happened. The couch, the tv, the games on the computer, the bed, the shower, and the toilet were my friends. My inner voice said earlier in the day "rough patch" -- had a reached a rough patch? Then I got busy... I rearranged the dining room... I did some laundry... I wacthed a movie...and during the movie the character "was stuck"... and artist also... their mentor gave them a block of wood. The block of wood was to represent themselves... the block could be anything it wanted to be... but you needed to believe that... self believe... it was coming back... I needed to believe in myself... believe in my work. So I created this piece to remove my creative block.

From Wall to Wash

Created these images from photos taken today as I walked the streets of downtown Houston. One was of a mirrored sculpture piece on a wall that was exposed building. The final was that of my windows going through the car wash. In filtering the images (the B&W is my personal favorite)... and then combining them to create new works. Not sure what they say as they remain abstract.

When in doubt return to the creative soul. It will lead you in the right direction.

Connections

It has been a busy week. Connections have been the theme. Connecting with friends, connecting with art, connecting with artists, galleries, customers, work, taxes, charity, creative spirit, with laundry, with relaxation, with stress, with my breathing, old collections, old friends, old memories, new memories, , drag queens, strippers, twizzlers, big brother 9 shout outs to Josh on the Texas highway 45, rain clouds, tornados, and memories of recent earthquakes.
Now as we approach mid week, I am trying to get centered, back to a routine, back to some normal efforts - focus on returning to the work. Looking at the creative elements of my life and concentrating on my expression. This is a start.
